American Hero Dog – Remington

K9 Remington, the 2020 Search and Rescue Hero Dog, is more than just a retired search and rescue K9 – he is a cancer fighter and survivor, and an advocate for dogs in both fire service and retired K9s.

Remi was nationally certified in Human Remains Detection and worked many cases across the United States with Special K9s Search and Rescue, a unit dedicated to assisting in the detection, location and recovery of buried primary crime scenes and hidden remains. Remi spent his entire life fighting for those who could not fight for themselves. He searched for missing people, followed up on cold cases and even helped with Hurricane Harvey recovery.

When not on searches, Remi worked with the fire service, first at the New Caney Fire Department and later with Navasota Fire Department. He was a constant figure at public relations events, teaching civilians about search and rescue, as well as fire safety. Remi brought comfort to firefighters after long shifts and rough calls.

On June 19, 2019, Remi was medically retired after unexplained lameness, and sadly he was eventually diagnosed with a puerperal nerve sheath tumor. Tragically, euthanasia was advised because of financial burden, but that’s when Project K9 Hero’s Jason Johnson stepped in. Jason promised to take care of the medical bills so that Remi could fight for the survival he deserved. Doctors at TAMU Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital saved his life, and all vet bills were paid by Project K9 Hero donors.

Remi still has cancer and now only has three legs, but he continues to live his life representing Project K9 Hero at events to raise awareness and funding for other retired K9s. Remi is more than a search dog; he is a hero!
