WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, January 1, 2021 — American Humane, the country’s first national humane organization, which for 144 years has been first to serve in the protection of animals, has promoted Jan Bigelow, its vice president of finance, to the position of Chief Financial Officer. Replacing retiring longtime CFO Clifford Rose, Bigelow is the latest in a growing roster of top-tier executives charged with carrying out an ambitious agenda championed by American Humane President and CEO Dr. Robin Ganzert to help even more animals in need.
“Jan’s experience helps further strengthen our quest to help the most animals in the most effective and responsible way,” said Dr. Ganzert. “We are very grateful to have her take over this vitally important position.”
Bigelow has more than 30 years of experience in handling the finances of major nonprofits, for-profit organizations and trade associations to help steward the growing support for rapidly expanding programs at American Humane. In just the past ten years, the number of animals saved, sheltered, fed and protected has soared by more than 2,000 percent to some one billion animals per year.
Bigelow has held management-level positions with BDO Seidman, Kiplinger Washington Editors, Pew Center for Global Climate Change and Communities in Schools. She holds a CPA from the State of Virginia and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Lycoming College. Bigelow lives in Virginia with her husband and dog.
“I am truly honored to take on this role at American Humane,” said Ms. Bigelow. “I look forward to continuing to work alongside my exceptional colleagues and helping American Humane protect and serve more animals.”
Bigelow is a senior leader in an organization that puts a premium on responsible stewardship of charitable dollars. American Humane is the only national humane group with a top “Four-Star Rating” from Charity Navigator and more than 91 cents of every dollar spent goes directly to programs. American Humane has been named a “Top-Rated Charity” with an “A” rating by both the American Institute of Philanthropy’s CharityWatch and Great Nonprofits and was awarded the gold level seal from GuideStar USA. The organization has also earned the Independent Charities Seal of Excellence, was awarded inclusion on Better Business Bureau’s prestigious Wise Giving Alliance Accredited Charities list and was designated as a “Best Charity” by Consumer Reports.
