For many of our nation’s brave service members, returning home is only the beginning of another daunting battle. The invisible wounds of war, including Post-Traumatic Stress and Traumatic Brain Injury, can cause debilitating symptoms in veterans, leading to depression, social isolation and, far too often, suicide. Luckily, service dogs can make all the difference.

Research shows that specially trained service dogs can reduce stress and anxiety levels, mitigate depression, ease social reintegration, provide comfort and restore confidence in affected veterans. However, there are many obstacles standing in the way of veterans in need of service dogs including long waiting lists and exorbitant costs, reaching upwards of $30,000 per service dog. That’s where we can help.

Through our Pups4Patriots™ program, American Humane harnesses the healing powers of the human-animal bond to save lives. We train dogs in search of forever homes to be service dogs and pair them with veterans in need, at no cost to the veteran.

Flynn and Huey are beginning their vigorous training programs to become the best service dogs they can be, and they can’t wait to meet their veteran partners!

In addition to providing exceptional training to each individual dog, American Humane oversees intensive hands-on training sessions to cultivate the important connection between the veteran and his or her new service dog. Creating a welcoming environment conducive to this bonding process is crucial to the success of our program.
