WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, June 27, 2023 — Today, American Humane, the country’s first national animal welfare organization, is partnering with Ultra Intelligence & Communications (Ultra I&C) to help spread awareness about the Pups4Patriots Program. The lifesaving initiative finds dogs in search of forever homes and trains them to be lifesaving service animals for veterans with post-traumatic stress or traumatic brain injury. From June 27 to 29, Mike—who built a career in law enforcement after serving in the U.S. Armed Forces—will be with his four-legged companion, Justice, at the Modern Day Marine Expo to share their experience with the Pups4Patriots Program.

Veterans struggling with the invisible wounds of war are too often left to deal with the debilitating symptoms of post-traumatic stress or traumatic brain injury alone. That can lead to depression, social isolation and, unfortunately, suicide. Research shows that service dogs can be incredible companions to our returning heroes, helping to reduce stress and anxiety levels, mitigate depression, ease social reintegration, provide comfort, and restore confidence.
That’s what the Pups4Patriots Program is all about. American Humane offers exceptionally trained service dogs to veterans in need, at absolutely no cost to the former service member. American Humane oversees intensive hands-on training sessions to cultivate the important connection between the veteran and his or her new service dog. The program has provided four-legged companions and training to more than 200 veterans across the country, with the support of donors and sponsors like Ultra I&C.
“My life really began to go off the rails when I retired and had time to process my experience in the military and in law enforcement,” said Mike, a veteran who participated in the Pups4Patriots program. “Reality hit me hard and I became introverted, depressed, and anxious. But now, after going through the Pups4Patriots program with my dog Justice, my life has turned around for the better. I couldn’t speak more highly of American Humane and their work to connect people like me to four-legged companions.”
