American Humane Receives $50,000 Grant from the Adtalem Global Education Foundation to Support Pups4Patriots

WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, July 7, 2023 — Today, American Humane, the country’s first national animal welfare organization, announced that the Adtalem Global Education Foundation has provided a grant to support the Pups4Patriots program. The $50,000 contribution from the Adtalem Global Education Foundation—an organization headquartered in Chicago, IL that supports charitable, educational, and research endeavors with a focus on programs that aim to address healthcare disparities for both humans and animals—will help fund efforts to train service dogs for veterans diagnosed with Post-Traumatic Stress or Traumatic Brain Injury.

American Humane is committed to harnessing the healing power of the human-animal bond to put more healing leashes into the hands of more veterans in need. Through Pups4Patriots, American Humane finds dogs in search of forever homes and trains them to be lifesaving service dogs. To date, American Humane has provided service dogs and training to more than 200 veterans across the country.

“After leaving the warzone, some of our returning military heroes face another daunting obstacle,” said Dr. Robin Ganzert, President and CEO of American Humane. “As they return to civilian life, many have mental scars of war that manifest as anxiety, depression, and nightmares—struggles that can be eased by the healing power of a wagging tail. That’s why support provided by the Adtalem Global Education Foundation for the Pups4Patriots program is so exciting. The grant will go a long way to helping veterans live their lives to the fullest.”

“The Adtalem Global Education Foundation believes wholeheartedly that animals have a positive impact on the physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing of humans,” said Sean Callanan, MVB, Dean, Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine, board member of Adtalem Global Education Foundation. “This human-animal bond speaks to the One Health philosophy we believe is important in healthcare education. It is a privilege to provide an animal companion to a veteran in need, and I feel the mission of Pups4Patriots is truly invaluable.”

The Pups4Patriots program is made possible through the generous support of donors. To learn more and contribute to the program, visit www.AmericanHumane.org.
