SSgt Michael and MWD John share an unbreakable bond formed through their dedicated service together, where they spent countless hours patrolling and responding to explosive threats. For SSgt Michael, John was more than just a military companion; he was a loyal friend and guardian, always by his side.

American Humane proudly facilitated this reunion, coordinating closely with SSgt Michael and the U.S. military to ensure MWD John’s safe return home. Throughout his journey, our animal care expert, April, accompanied John, providing him with attentive care, including restful breaks, enjoyable baths, and playful moments with his favorite toy.

“When I found out that John was up for retirement, of course, I wanted him so bad,” said SSgt. Mike Alcala. “I heard about American Humane through a buddy of mine, so I thought I would reach out and see what American Humane could do for me and John. They were gracious to help go pick him up in Hawaii, transport him back to me, and without me having to pay anything. It’s just been a blessing for us.”

In addition to transporting John from Hawaii to San Antonio, American Humane is also covering all of John’s veterinary care for the rest of his life.

Military Working Dogs serve proudly alongside their military men and women and deserve to be recognized as heroes too.
