Heroic canines can do so much to enrich human lives and experiences, including giving their handlers a new leash on life. Henna, a German Shepherd, is a beloved hearing and guide dog who helps her handler, Meagan, who is deaf and legally blind, navigate the world with confidence.
Consider an incidence in 2020, when Meagan was crossing the road at a familiar intersection. Already halfway through the crosswalk, Meagan had no idea that an 18-wheeler was barreling towards them. Henna sprung into action, reversing quickly and pulling Meagan to safety. Meagan knows that “this was only one of many times she saved my life while allowing me freedom.“
Thanks to a wellspring of public support, Hennas has won the honor of the 2021 Guide/Hearing Hero Dog. This year’s competition was especially fierce, with more than 400 nominees entering the competition. Now, just seven finalists are vying for the title of America Hero Dog.
Through this competition, American Humane aims to shine a spotlight on heroic canines from all corners of the country. Henna, along with the other six finalists, will take part in a star-studded Hero Dog Awards gala in Palm Beach on November 12. Animal lovers are invited to vote, once per day, for their favorite pup through September 7 at www.HeroDogAwards.org.
