A Look Back on Adopt-A-Dog Month®

All month long we’ve been celebrating Adopt-A-Dog Month® and all things canine while encouraging people to head out to their local shelters or rescue groups to give precious pups the loving forever home that they deserve. Check out some of the ways we’ve honored pooches across the country this October:

Shared Your Rescue Stories

Thanks to those that submitted their rescue stories, we heard about a rescue pup turned therapy dog, the amazing transformation of a yard sale pup, and the four-legged friend that came along right when she was needed. We love hearing about your amazing rescue stories!

Provided Dog Care Tips

Dogs can be a handful to take care of sometimes, so this Adopt-A-Dog Month®, we made sure you were prepared to handle whatever dogs could throw at you. From tips on behavior issues to cleaning up after them, to how to make them happiest in their new home, we covered the gamut on how to address newly adopted dogs in new homes so everyone can make the transition happily, peacefully, and quickly.

Transported Animals out of Harm’s Way

Only weeks after the devastation of Hurricane Florence, our American Humane Rescue Team was back in the southeast moving at-risk shelter dogs out of the path of Hurricane Michael. After the storm had passed, we took more dogs to safe ground and out of the shelters that, even days after the storm, remained without electricity.

Crowned New Hero Dogs

This month we saw the crowning of seven new Hero Dogs that won top spots at the American Humane Hero Dog Awards, presented by the Lois Pope LIFE Foundation and Zoetis Petcare. Chi Chi, a quadruple amputee and therapy dog, took home the top title to become the 2018 Hero Dog! Her resilience and perseverance warmed the hearts of the country as her openness and smile quickly spread to others. Viewers from across the country watched the awards, which aired on Hallmark Channel, and shared their own messages of adoption and love for animals.

Visited a Local Animal Shelter

On the last day of Adopt-A-Dog Month®, American Humane visited the Animal Welfare League of Arlington to talk about Adopt-A-Dog Month® and discuss some of the specific challenges dogs face when coming into shelters. We played with and got to know some of their adoptable dogs and fell in love. We met Sierra, a small puppy rescued from South Korea, Bagel the Beagle, a shy five-year-old who spent the visit in a fairy princess costume, and so many other dogs. Thanks to the Animal Welfare League of Arlington for introducing us to these precious pups.

Remember – Adopt-A-Dog Month® is celebrated each October, but there are dogs in shelters looking for homes all year-round. Visit your local shelter or rescue group and bring home a forever friend!
