On Feb. 1, a Red Star Animal Emergency Services team delivered hay to nearly 500 starving and sick horses outside of Billings, Mont. Spread out over 2,600 acres, the horses had been surviving on nothing but sagebrush and yucca for the last month.
Working with the NILE (Northern International Livestock Exposition), our team dispersed hay in various spots on the property, focusing their drops around drinking holes they had chopped in the ice on a small pond.
The owner has been charged with five primary misdemeanor counts of animal cruelty and five alternative counts. We await the judge’s ruling before taking any future action. The horses will require veterinary and specialist care before they are back to health.
