About the Kiessling Prize

Each year, Global Humane Society, the international arm of American Humane Society, awards the Wolfgang Kiessling International Prize for Species Conservation to scientists and conservation leaders whose work has made lasting contributions to protecting species and biodiversity. The prize includes a grant to support recipients in continuing their conservation work.

The Kiessling Prize is named in honor of Wolfgang F. Kiessling, a conservationist who has dedicated more than five decades to saving species from extinction. His legacy of leadership and commitment to protecting species, habitats and the vital role of zoos and aquariums in conservation serves as the standard the prize seeks to recognize.

Nominations are accepted from throughout the global conservation community, spanning species, research disciplines and geographies. Each year’s finalists and recipients represent the breadth and depth of the field — scientists and leaders whose work reflects the kind of measurable, lasting impact the prize was created to celebrate.
