Dr. Grimes was born in Virginia and was raised on a farm in Halifax County in eastern North Carolina. He experienced typical farm rearing and worked in the fields of row crop farming including tobacco, peanuts, corn, and soybeans. He also experienced livestock production with hands-on work with swine and some beef cattle. He graduated from NC State University earning a BS degree in Wildlife Biology in 1980 and a BS degree in Poultry Science in 1981. He gained invaluable experience in broiler production by working as a broiler service supervisor for Perdue Farms in the Lewiston, NC, complex from 1981 to 1984. He entered graduate School and studied in the Department of Poultry Science at NC State University in 1984 under the direction of the late Dr. Jon Ort with nutrition as his major working with turkey breeder hens. Upon completing his PhD, Dr. Grimes was on the faculty at Clemson University from 1989 to 1994 as an Extension Scientist working with commercial layers. In 1994, he began his current employment at NC State University in the Prestage Department of Poultry Science as an Extension Turkey Specialist. The major areas of his research and extension interests are the effect of nutrition and management on turkey welfare and production, turkey reproduction, and turkey waste management. His research activities include examining various rearing methods and feeding regimens to improve the health and care of turkeys. Extension educational programs are also part of his activities. Dr. Grimes is a certified animal care auditor and member of PAACO and serves as a PAACO instructor. (PAACO – Professional Animal Auditor Certification Organization, Inc.)
