Fall is the time to harvest all the good things that sustain us. This year, with your help, we planted many seeds of hope and are happy to report the world’s animals are reaping the rewards of your kindness, as you will see in this issue’s many stories of rescue, reunions and renewal. Thanks to your support, we met our goal of 1,000,000 meals delivered to abandoned shelter animals during the pandemic; protected 400,000 rare and endangered species around the world; helped ensure better lives for hundreds of millions of farm animals; and, gave a new leash on life to our human and K-9 military heroes by bringing home retired war dogs and supplying veterans with lifesaving service dogs.

Autumn also brings with it a welcome new crop of adorable youngsters being born at American Humane Certified zoos and aquariums around the world, helping replenish the stocks of Earth’s most remarkable and endangered species. In the pages that follow, you will meet three wallabies, a rescued elephant seal, and an adorably tiny creature called a “duiker.”

And as temperatures cool, our annual competitions to name the country’s top hero dogs and veterinary heroes are heating up. Be sure to tune in to our national television broadcast of the American Humane Hero Dog and Hero Vet Awards on Hallmark Drama (October 20, 2021 from 9-11 pm ET/PT) and join us at our star-studded Hero Dog Awards gala in Palm Beach on November 12. You won’t want to miss the fun!
