Loose Cannons (1989)
Detective Mac Stern has a reputation for petty eccentricities. Some feel that he is overly fond of his vintage auto and his pet cat, but when Stern is assigned to a murder case he is teamed with a new partner, Ellis Fielding, who re-defines the meaning of eccentric. Fielding is also allergic to Stern’s cat and wrecks the vintage auto before crashing it into chicken crates (the crates were empty and chickens were put on the car’s hood afterward). Stern would like a new partner but reconsiders after he learns Fielding has been released from a Benedictine monastery where he has been institutionalized after being tortured by Columbian drug dealers. He’d been a genius drug detective and although he has retained his genius, he suffers from a multi-personality disorder and becomes Popeye, the Sundance Kid, or Spock from Star Trek whenever the going gets tough. When Stern is attacked in a porno club, Fielding comes to his aid and proves his worth as a detective and they begin working as a team. They must protect a porno film king who is a chief witness in the murder case. After they discover they are being trailed by Israeli secret agents, they learn their case involves a former buddy of Hitler’s who wants to be West Germany’s next Chancellor. The film is seasoned with comedy and violence as the pair unravels the crime and brings the criminals to justice.
