In the scene where the three actors are talking in the living room, the father shoots a gun, the dog reacts, prior to filming the scene, the trainer placed the dog on a down stay at the bottom of the living room stairs. When the actor yells and waves the gun around and pretends to shoot the gun, the sound of the gunshot was inserted in post production.
