Life Before Her Eyes (2008)
High school senior Diana’s (Evan Rachel Wood) reaction to a Columbine-type mass shooting — particularly her response to the killer’s request that she plead for her survival — deeply impacts her life. So when the 15th anniversary of the tragedy arrives, Diana’s (Uma Thurman) adult life is affected in unpredictable, mysterious ways.
Animal actors in this production were monitored through American Humane Society’s No Animals Were Harmed™ program.

Detailed Animal Action Report
Caterpillar
A caterpillar walks on a plant leaf as older Diana (Thurman) is gardening. For this shot, trainers took the caterpillar out of a container and gently placed it on a leaf. The caterpillar was then allowed to do whatever came naturally, such as crawling, drinking dew and turning its head. Trainers retrieved the caterpillar immediately after filming.
Cougar and cat
A cougar is in a cage in young Diana’s (Wood) boyfriend’s house, while a cat is seen in the foreground and background. While lying on the couch, Diana holds the cat and her boyfriend blows cigarette smoke on it. The cigarette was an herbal cigarette with non- irritating smoke and takes were limited.
The cougar, named Hailey, was supposed to appear agitated in this scene, but she was so calm and comfortable that it was difficult to make her look stressed. An off-camera trainer decided to cue Hailey to pace back and forth in her cage to seem stressed. The set was enclosed and secured, and only necessary cast and crew were allowed on set.
For the part of the scene in which Diana plays with the house cat on the couch, the actress held and played with the cat freely. The cat did whatever came naturally. Trainers hid behind the couch to help get the cat to stay. The actress was introduced to the cat and instructed on its proper handling before filming began. The cat and the cougar were both given water and rest between takes.
Due to late notification or limited resources, American Humane did not monitor all of the cat action or any of the bird and insect action.
