In the scene where the man points the gun at the actress with a dog lying at his feet, trainers were off-camera cuing the dog to keep him in place. After cut, the actor was given treats to feed the dog.
In the same scene the actor accidentally shoots his finger off, the dog eats the finger and the actress picks the dog up, petting him. The finger was made of rubber, the dog was cued to pick it up by the trainer off-camera. The actress was instructed how to pick up dog prior to filming the scene.
The dead deer in the back of the truck was a taxidermy deer and production provided the American Humane Association with the correct documentation.
