Newcomer Robert Brown plays Jamal, a gifted African-American athlete who aspires to be a writer. Jamal strikes up an unlikely friendship with his mentor (Sean Connery), a reclusive novelist who admires Jamal for his perseverance both in and out of the classroom.

The only animal action in the film occurs during an outdoor basketball scene. A man walks a dog on a leash in the background. For this, the animal trainer handed the dog to actor and stood off-camera as the dog obediently walked by the actor’s side.
