A Star Is Born
Detailed Animal Action Report
Throughout the film, the main character has a pet dog, who is seen performing such mild action as sitting/standing/lying, being held or petted, and walking/running on or off leash. For all these scenes, trainers used hand signals and verbal commands to cue the mild action, which the trained dog was accustomed to performing. The barking/growling was also a trained behavior.
In the scene where the actor plays a guitar and the dog lies near him, the dog was brought to the set by the trainer and placed on the couch where the actor was lying down. On action the actor petted the dog then got up and went to the piano in the same room and began playing. As the actor played the piano, the trainer released the dog who walked up to the actor. Following filming the dog was leashed and taken away from the set.
In the scene where the actor places a cooked steak on the ground and the dog walks over and licks it, prior to shooting the scene the trainer stood out of frame about five feet from the kitchen. On action, the actor fried the steak in a pan for a beat then placed it on a plate and set it on the floor. The actor called the dog over and the dog began licking and biting at the steak, but never consumed any of it. As soon as they called cut, the steak was taken away.
