Animal actors in this production were monitored through American Humane Society’s No Animals Were Harmed™ program.
A Quiet Place
Detailed Animal Action Report
In the scene where the actor looks out the window and sees two raccoons drop onto the ground from the ceiling, the trainers set up fencing and two mark crates outside the barn with the camera facing out window. The fencing and the crates were camouflaged with bushes. When ready, a props person dropped two taxidermy raccoons from a ladder pass the window. When they landed the trainers released two real raccoons from their carrying cases. The raccoons ran from point A to point B. After getting a few shots of the raccoons running from one trainer to another, they were placed back in their crates and given food and water.
In the subsequent scene when we see the raccoons run through the cornfield maze and we see one of them get pulverized by the monster’s claw, like the last sequence, they let the raccoons let them out of their crates and run from A to B. The action of the raccoon getting pulverized was created with CGI in post-production.
In the scene where the actor pulls a live fish from the river and places him on the ground, the animal wrangler carried a bucket with five live fish to set. He then placed a live fish inside the trap on the moving water. The props department then placed a dead fish on a fish trap on his mark by the river. Then, on action, the actor picked up the dead fish and put it on the rock. All of the fish were placed back on the bucket. Everything went well.
