Global Humane Society Opens First European Office in Brussels

Brussels office to spearhead European animal welfare initiatives

Global Humane Society, the international arm of the Washington D.C.-based American Humane Society, is proud to announce the opening of its first representative office in the European Union, located in Brussels.

Founded on nearly 150 years of leadership in advancing the humane treatment of animals, Global Humane Society works worldwide to safeguard animals across conservation, agriculture, tourism, rescue and the entertainment industry. Its internationally recognized “No Animals Were Harmed”® program remains the iconic standard for animal welfare in film and television productions.

The organization’s impact includes:

  • Protecting over 1.5 billion animals annually, with 1 billion of those being farm animals
  • Assisting, sheltering and rescuing more than 85,000 animals
  • Safeguarding 500,000 animals in zoos and aquariums worldwide

The new Brussels office will serve as a hub for collaboration with European institutions, industry stakeholders, and NGOs to extend the reach of its scientific expertise and operational programs. While Global Humane Society has long been active in Europe through its work certifying zoos, aquariums, and monitoring film productions, establishing a permanent platform in Brussels marks a powerful and inspirational step forward, solidifying the organization’s commitment to Europe and opening new opportunities to shape a more humane future for animals across the continent.

“The launch of our Brussels office represents an important milestone for Global Humane Society in Europe,” said Dr. Robin Ganzert, President and CEO of Global Humane Society. “Having a dedicated presence here strengthens our ability to collaborate with partners, extend our knowledge and promote the highest standards of animal welfare across industries. Building on our 150-year legacy in animal protection, we serve as a competent authority on animal welfare issues, with work rooted in science and evidence-based practices. As the largest certifier of animal welfare in the world, this step energizes our mission and opens new possibilities to create lasting, positive change for animals throughout Europe.”

Global Humane Society extends its gratitude to Tamás Lajos Szalay, Lila Harangozó and István Ujhelyi for their support in helping bring this milestone to life. During the opening, the organization also met with key partners and stakeholders, including the Motion Picture Association Brussels and H.E. Ambassador Luvsanvandan Bold of Mongolia, whose engagement will be vital in shaping the next phase of this work in Europe.
