Renowned conservation leader to help drive expansion of global animal welfare programs, certifications and initiatives
American Humane Society, the United States’ first national humane organization and the world’s leading certifier of animal welfare practices, is proud to announce the appointment of Dr. Erin Meyer as its new Chief Program Officer. In this role, Dr. Meyer will oversee the organization’s wide-ranging programs dedicated to rescuing, caring for and protecting animals worldwide.
After a rigorous search process, American Humane Society selected Dr. Meyer for this pivotal leadership role. She brings a distinguished record and nearly two decades of experience at the intersection of conservation, animal welfare and mission-driven program development. Dr. Meyer’s visionary leadership and advocacy have been driving forces for transformative conservation programs and initiatives around the world.

As Chief Program Officer, Dr. Meyer will oversee the strategic direction of American and Global Humane Society programs, ensuring consistent impact and growth. She will also lead major initiatives and certification platforms under the American Humane Certified™ and Global Humane Certified™ seals.

Dr. Meyer will serve as a key advisor to the President and CEO, foster collaboration across departments, cultivate strategic partnerships and further expand American Humane Society’s programs and certifications. Her deep conservation expertise and proven record of building transformative, science-driven initiatives will propel American Humane Society’s mission forward with measurable outcomes and lasting impact.
Before joining American Humane Society, she served as Chief Conservation Officer at the Seattle Aquarium, where she led global initiatives in climate resilience and species recovery.
Dr. Meyer earned her Ph.D. in Integrative Biology from the University of California, Berkeley, and holds bachelor’s degrees in marine biology and conservation from Rutgers University.
