American Humane Presents Otra Mas with Feed the Hungry Grant

WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, June 2, 2020American Humane, the country’s first national humane organization, today announced that Otra Mas, A Horse Rescue and Equine Therapy Organization, received a grant from American Humane’s Feed the Hungry fund. Located in San Juan Capistrano, California, Otra Mas adopts rescued and retired performance horses, rehabilitates them and retrains them to be partners with humans in its Equine-Assisted Learning (EAL) and Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) programs.

At least once a week, Otra Mas gets a call about a horse in need. Often, they are performance horses or working horses who can no longer perform due to age or injury. Otra Mas was founded out of the need for a place that could take these aging, injured or abandoned horses in, rehabilitate them and retrain them for a new life’s purpose. Once given the opportunity to transition and heal, the horses who come to Otra Mas become therapy horses in the EAT and EAP programs. In their new roles, these horses are given the chance to be happy, useful and well cared for while having a meaningful “second life” giving back to the community. With a new home on a six-acre ranch, a new horse and human herd to interact with daily, superior care and a new career, Otra Mas gives horses a second chance at life and, for most, their final chance. The Feed the Hungry fund will allow the team at Otra Mas to continue to feed and care for the horses.
