WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, March 8, 2021 — American Humane, the country’s first national humane organization, today announced that the Humane Society of Carroll County received a grant from American Humane’s Feed the Hungry fund. Located in Westminster, Maryland, the Humane Society of Carroll County is dedicated to compassionate treatment of animals through adoption, population control, education and protection.
“Animals have a special place in my heart, and I am saddened to see so many being abandoned and left hungry as a result of this sweeping COVID-19 pandemic,” said Jean Shafiroff, national spokesperson for American Humane’s Feed the Hungry campaign and renowned philanthropist. “We must ensure that rescue organizations have the basic resources necessary to care for these defenseless animals who are in dire need of a forever home.”
Like every other business or organization in America, rescues and shelters are struggling to maintain basic services and care for their animal residents in the face of the current worldwide pandemic. Thousands of animals are being left without homes and facilities are in desperate need of general supplies. Detrimental natural disasters further heightened the situation. In response to the overwhelming number of calls received from animal rescuers, shelters and first responders, American Humane launched the Feed the Hungry fund to feed and care for animals across the country who have been abandoned during the coronavirus crisis. The fund seeks to raise much-needed resources to help shelters and rescue organizations that are not only struggling to keep the lights on, but also to keep critical supplies like food stocked.
“On behalf of all the staff here at the Humane Society of Carroll County, we would like to send out a huge thank you to American Humane for providing us with their Feed the Hungry grant,” said Jennifer Rein, Canine Coordinator at the Humane Society of Carroll County. “As everyone knows, the COVID pandemic has hit a lot of places pretty hard and unfortunately this year, we have not been able to hold two of our biggest fundraisers… This grant from American Humane helps us greatly with aiding and replenishing some of our medical fund.”
The Humane Society of Carroll County has been advocating for the health and proper care of animals for nearly 75 years. The shelter aims to find suitable, loving homes for abandoned and stray animals, and enforce state and county animal laws. The Feed the Hungry grant will be used for the Humane Society of Carroll County’s medical fund – covering the costs of spay and neuter services, vaccinations and emergency vetting as well as providing care for dogs with heartworm.
