WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, April 7, 2020 — American Humane, the country’s first national humane organization, today announced that Companion Animal Alliance is a recipient of American Humane’s Feed the Hungry grant. Located in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, CAA is an animal shelter that was formed in 2010 to increase the save rate of animals in the Baton Rouge community.
“COVID19 is impacting communities everywhere, and Baton Rouge is no different,” said Jillian Sergio, Executive Directive of CAA. “We know the people of Baton Rouge love their pets, and we want to keep as many pets and owners together as possible. If you or anyone you know have been impacted by COVID19 and need assistance keeping their pet, please contact CAA and let us know. We can provide food and other supplies to help keep you and your pet together during this challenging time. A special thanks to American Humane for supporting CAA and allowing us to keep the families of Baton Rouge together.”
CAA was selected as a recipient of the grant because of its demonstrated success in reducing the number of animals entering the shelter in Baton Rouge. The team provides spay/neuter services and other resources for pet owners. CAA treats animals humanely while they are in the shelter’s care and finds forever homes, foster homes and rescues for lost and abandoned animals. In partnership with the East Baton Rouge City-Parish, CAA operates the EBR Parish open-intake shelter, caring for nearly 8,000 animals each year including cats, dogs, horses, wildlife and exotic animals. CAA has increased the save rate of animals to 77 percent annually from 20 percent in 2010.
