Pet Provider

Why Choose an American Humane Certified™ Pet Provider?

Throughout time, pets have been, are, and will always be staples in our lives. Because of this special bond it’s important that we consider not only where our pets come from but also who is involved in the process of caring for them before they reach your home. Pet providers who meet American Humane’s rigorous science-based certification standards set themselves apart from others and give pet owners assurance that their pets have been treated well on the journey to their new family.

American Humane’s Pet Provider program is focused on assessing the condition, well-being and welfare of small mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, invertebrates and aquatic life at pet provider locations and animal suppliers. American Humane Certified brands are distinguished as those that prioritize animal welfare. The program incorporates science- and evidence-based practices into a verifiable third-party audit program.

Core Principles

Orange Snake
No Observed Animal Abuse or Neglect

Observations of willful acts or unintentional signs of abuse or neglect by any person at the facility will automatically result in failure of the audit.

Gecko
Appropriate Veterinary Care Plan

The facility must have a relationship and plan in effect regarding sick/injured animals with a qualified and licensed veterinarian.

Red Frog
Appropriate Staff Conduct

Facility staff must be knowledgeable regarding the facility’s animal care protocols and procedures, as well as conduct themselves in a manner that promotes animal welfare.

Certified Pet Providers

The humane treatment of all animals is paramount to American Humane. It is our moral obligation to ensure they are treated well and with high animal welfare standards. Consumers can be confident that when they see the American Humane Certified™ seal, they know the pets they are welcoming into their homes have received high levels of care and attention.

Following rigorous audits administered by independent American Humane inspectors, certified pet providers are awarded the coveted American Humane Certified™ seal of approval. All small mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, invertebrates and aquatic life at certified pet care centers and animal supplier facilities are not only in good physical condition but enjoy excellent overall welfare. Certified providers should be commended for proactively taking the next step to ensure animals in their care are treated humanely and ethically.
