Biography

Melissa is a CPA with more than 20 years of experience in accounting and finance with a focus in not-for-profit accounting. In her role with American Humane, Melissa oversees the daily operations of the finance team with an eye toward helping the organization reach its budgetary goals.

Prior to joining American Humane, Melissa served as the chief financial officer for the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace for over 15 years where she managed the daily accounting and financial reporting, managing the grants accounting and reporting function, preparing the organizational operating budgets and strategic forecasts, monitoring and strengthening the internal control structure, and ensuring compliance with financial regulatory requirements. Melissa also served as the finance board liaison and provided financial oversite of representative offices around the world including Belgium, India, Lebanon, Russia, and China.

Melissa has also worked in the public accounting industry as an audit manager specializing in not-for-profits and additionally served as the Controller for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

Melissa earned her MBA from the University of Maryland and BA in business administration from Southern Methodist University.

When Melissa isn’t perusing spreadsheets, she loves spending time at home with her husband, her two kids and rescue pups Bullet and Ruby.
