We are thrilled to share that retired military working dog Akim is now back in the arms of his best friend, Senior Airmen Jenna. After nearly a year apart, Akim finally ran into SrA Jenna’s loving arms on the morning of July 12 in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Uniquely qualified in detection and patrol, Akim was paired with SrA Jenna in 2020. The two served together in South Korea, patrolling the air base, searching vehicles at the gates, and training with the Republic of Korea Air Force Special Forces. In November 2021, they were forced to part ways.

Our military team coordinated this reunification effort with SrA Jenna, the U.S. military, and our partners in pet transportation to bring MWD Akim from Osan Air Base, South Korea, to Albuquerque, New Mexico. To ensure Akim’s health and safety during the journey home, American Humane’s animal care expert, with oversight from our Chief Veterinary Officer, was involved at every step of the way.

Military Working Dogs serve proudly alongside their military men and women and deserve to be recognized as heroes too. When retired, they should be given a chance to come home and live out their remaining days on U.S. soil. Please donate to American Humane today to help us reunite more military heroes like Akim with their former handlers, provide free specialty and preventative medical care to make their retirements as comfortable as possible, and provide much-needed funding to all of our lifesaving and impactful programs.
