Meet Canela

Canela is a multi-medical alert service dog who goes above and beyond every day.

As the service dog for a chemist, she wears full PPE to enter the lab—not only attending classes, but also assisting throughout an entire undergraduate thesis project. Together, they walked the graduation stage, where Canela received a special service patch and a personal commendation from the college president. Now, the two are pursuing a Ph.D. in inorganic chemistry.

Her most impressive gift is instinct paired with adaptability. When her handler unexpectedly began experiencing heart issues, Canela sensed the change before symptoms were even recognized. Without ever being taught, she performed a brand-new alert, prompting her handler to lie down immediately and preventing a fainting episode.

Off duty, Canela transforms into what can only be described as a “black hole of love,” endlessly seeking pets, pats, and cuddles. No matter how much affection she receives, she always wants more—and after a hard day’s work, she’s earned every bit of it.
