Xena Was Able to Have a Second Chance Because of YOU

When Xena was discovered, it was clear something terrible had happened. She had suffered severe trauma believed to be caused by heavy machinery. Her injuries included a broken pelvis, a shattered femur and a deep abdominal wound. The damage was so extensive that she would later lose a leg. Without immediate veterinary care, Xena would not have survived.

Her road to healing was long and painful. It included emergency surgery to repair her pelvis and femur, amputation to prevent further suffering, hospitalization, pain management and weeks of follow-up care. It was extensive care. It was costly care. And it was the only chance Xena had to live.

Love alone could not heal her injuries. But love made action possible.

On Love Your Pet Day, we honor the pets who depend on us completely. Xena needed someone to step in for her.

With the help of compassionate supporters like you, an American Humane Society Second Chance® Grant helped cover the extensive medical treatment Xena needed. The grant ensured she received the care required to stabilize her injuries, manage her pain and give her fragile body time to heal.

Slowly, Xena began to recover. The pain eased. Her strength returned. And as she started to feel better, her true personality emerged. Despite everything she endured, Xena greeted caregivers with gentle purrs and quiet trust. Her resilience was a powerful reminder of why second chances matter.

As Xena healed, a bond formed with the person caring for her day and night through surgeries and recovery. What began as a temporary foster placement became something permanent.

Today, Xena is living the life Love Your Pet Day represents. She confidently navigates the world on three legs, spends her days basking in the sunlight and has bonded closely with her feline companions. She is safe, cherished and deeply loved.

Her journey is proof of what happens when injured animals are given time, care and a second chance.

The Power of a Second Chance

American Humane Society’s Second Chance Grants fund emergency surgeries, life-changing treatments and recovery care for animals rescued from heartbreaking circumstances. Whether it’s a dog pulled from a neglectful home, a cat left injured on the street, or a horse starved and forgotten — this program gives them the medical support they need to survive and thrive.

But none of it is possible without the generosity of people like you.

When you donate, you help fund critical care for animals who might otherwise be lost. And your gift helps American Humane Society continue responding wherever the need is greatest — so no animal has to suffer simply because resources weren’t there.
