Shot three times, but Tuffy help
onto hope.
Tuffy was shot multiple times and left badly injured, fighting to survive.
Thanks to a Second Chance® Grant from American Humane Society, he received lifesaving surgeries, healed, and found a loving forever home.
Your gift today helps give hope and healing to the next animal in need.
Tuffy was able to have a second chance because of YOU.
When Tuffy was found, no one knew how long he had been suffering. Just days earlier, he had been seen wandering the neighborhood, seemingly unharmed. Then suddenly, he returned badly injured—bleeding from his eye and mouth, unable to walk and clearly in agony.
He was rushed to a veterinarian, where X-rays revealed the unthinkable: Tuffy had been shot multiple times. One bullet destroyed his eye. Another shattered his leg. A third remained lodged in his shoulder, a painful reminder of the cruelty he endured.
Despite unimaginable pain, Tuffy never gave up. Even as he waited for help, he leaned into gentle hands, rubbing his head against anyone who showed him kindness—quietly asking for comfort, for care, for a chance to live.
The cost of Tuffy’s medical care was overwhelming. He needed immediate surgeries to remove his damaged eye and leg in order to survive and live without pain. With no way forward on their own, his caregivers reached out to American Humane Society for help.
With the help of a Second Chance® Grant, Tuffy received the lifesaving surgeries he so desperately needed. His procedures ended his suffering and set him on a long road to recovery. For days, those caring for him watched closely—hoping, waiting, and believing he would pull through.
And he did.
As Tuffy healed, his gentle spirit emerged. Each day brought new strength, new confidence, and new signs of joy. The frightened, injured cat who had been shot and left to suffer transformed into a loving companion who purred at every soft touch and soaked up affection.
Today, Tuffy is fully recovered and living in a loving forever home, where he will never again know pain or fear.
But for every Tuffy, there are countless other animals still waiting. Animals who have been abused, neglected, or gravely injured and whose futures depend on compassionate people like you.
Your donation today helps give animals like Tuffy the medical care they need and the second chances they deserve. Your support also powers American Humane Society’s lifesaving work to protect animals everywhere—responding to crises, supporting recovery, and ensuring humane treatment across communities and beyond.
Please give today to help more animals like Tuffy find healing, hope and a second chance.

The Power of a Second Chance
American Humane Society’s Second Chance Grants fund emergency surgeries, life-saving treatments and recovery care for animals rescued from heartbreaking circumstances. Whether it’s a dog pulled from a neglectful home, a cat left injured on the street, or a horse starved and forgotten — this program gives them the medical support they need to survive and thrive.
But none of it is possible without the generosity of people like you.
When you donate, you help fund critical care for animals who might otherwise be lost. And your gift helps American Humane Society continue responding wherever the need is greatest — so no animal has to suffer simply because resources weren’t there.
