This Valentine’s Day, Love Gave Hansel & Gretel a Second Chance
Hansel and Gretel were found abandoned together in a public park, sick, frightened and suffering from severe neglect. Their bodies were covered in painful untreated mange and infection. Their future was uncertain. Love became their lifeline.
Because of compassionate supporters like you, a Second Chance® Grant helped cover the extensive medical treatment Hansel and Gretel needed to survive, heal and begin trusting again.
Give today and help the next animal like Hansel & Gretel while supporting all of American Humane Society’s critical work.
Hansel & Gretel Were Able to Have a Second Chance Because of YOU
When Hansel and Gretel were discovered as young puppies, their bond was clear. They clung to one another as they endured the pain of prolonged neglect.
Both puppies required urgent and intensive veterinary care. Their road to healing included medication, medicated baths, isolation boarding, repeated monitoring and ongoing treatment to fight severe skin disease and infection. Hansel’s condition was even more complex, requiring additional care to address respiratory illness, anemia and complications caused by prolonged neglect.
It was extensive care, expensive care, but it was the only chance they had to heal.
That’s where love stepped in.
With the help of an American Humane Society Second Chance® Grant, the cost of Hansel and Gretel’s extensive medical treatment was covered, giving them the time, safety and care they needed to recover together.
Slowly, their pain eased. Their bodies healed. And as they began to feel better, love did what medicine alone could not.
Gretel’s playful spirit emerged first. Her fur grew back. Her confidence blossomed. Today, she is healthy, happy and thriving in a loving home.
Hansel followed in his own time. Gentle and thoughtful, he learned to trust, lean into affection and believe that humans could be kind. He is currently in an adoption trial, continuing to heal as he steps into a life filled with stability and love.
Their paths may look different now, but their second chance began the same way — with compassion.
This Valentine’s Day, their story is a reminder that love heals, love protects and love saves lives.
