Once broken by cruelty, now healed by love.
Bean was just a puppy when she suffered third-degree burns over a third of her body. Her recovery took weeks of round-the-clock treatment and care — made possible by a Second Chance® Grant from American Humane Society.
Now healed and home with a loving family, Bean’s story shows how your compassion saves lives.
Donate now to give hope and healing to the next animal in desperate need.
Bean was able to have a second chance because of YOU.
When rescuers first met Bean, their hearts broke. At only four months old, her tiny body was covered in agonizing burns, her eyes filled with pain and confusion.
Her owner left her at a local rescue, claiming a neighbor had tried to harm her — then vanished. Bean was terrified, trembling and in urgent need of care. The rescue rushed her to an emergency hospital, where veterinarians found devastating injuries: third-degree burns on nearly a third of her small body, raw and blistered skin and an untreated leg fracture that left her in constant pain. Yet through it all, she never gave up. The fight in her eyes told everyone she wanted to live.
She was out of strength — but not out of hope.
Thanks to a Second Chance® Grant from American Humane Society, Bean received lifesaving care. Surgeons removed dead tissue and cleaned her burns, and she underwent intensive, round-the-clock treatment — including twice-daily laser therapy, ongoing pain management and frequent bandage changes to prevent infection.
As her body healed, her spirit began to shine. The frightened little pup who once whimpered in pain began wagging her tail, licking the hands that cared for her and leaning in for snuggles. And then, finally, the day came when Bean — healed, strong and full of love — made her journey to a forever home.
Today, Bean’s life is full of love, laughter and snuggles. She has two furry siblings, two adoring human siblings and parents who say she’s affectionate, playful and happiest when curled up for a nap. It’s hard to believe she’s the same puppy who once fought so hard just to survive.
Bean’s Second Chance wouldn’t have been possible without compassionate supporters like you. But for every Bean, there are countless animals still waiting who need someone to believe in them.

The Power of a Second Chance
American Humane Society’s Second Chance grants fund emergency surgeries, life-saving treatments and recovery care for animals rescued from heartbreaking circumstances. Whether it’s a dog pulled from a neglectful home, a cat left injured on the street, or a horse starved and forgotten — this program gives them the medical support they need to survive and thrive.
But none of it is possible without the generosity of people like you.
When you donate, you help fund critical care for animals who might otherwise be lost. And your gift helps American Humane Society continue responding wherever the need is greatest — so no animal has to suffer simply because resources weren’t there.
