The African Penguin, a curious species found along the southern coast of South Africa, is hurtling toward extinction, with just 1% of its original population remaining in the wild. Without urgent intervention from the South African government, scientists warn the species could disappear within the next decade.

At the center of this crisis is Algoa Bay. The body of water is home to the St. Croix and Bird Island groups—critical strongholds for the remaining African Penguin colonies. This rich ecosystem also supports marine life, from the tiniest sea critters to ocean giants.
Yet Algoa Bay is also positioned along a major commercial shipping corridor. Heavy vessel traffic and chronic underwater noise disrupt feeding and breeding patterns, while the risk of oil pollution remains constant. Even small spills can be devastating—coating penguins’ feathers, destroying their insulation and waterproofing, and leaving them unable to swim or hunt effectively.
We are therefore calling on the South African government to take immediate and decisive action. The relevant regulatory authorities must meaningfully enforce existing rules protecting wildlife in Algoa Bay, and policymakers should consider enacting even stronger safeguards. Economic development and environmental protection must go hand in hand. For too long, however, nature has borne the greater cost.
The decisions made today will determine the future of South Africa’s marine ecosystem—and the survival of the African Penguin. Delay is no longer an option.
