Top Five Tips for Setting a Humane Table This Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is a celebration of harvest, community, gratitude and generosity. It’s also an invitation to reflect on the journey of our food, from American farms to a table surrounded with loved ones.

In choosing humanely raised foods, your Thanksgiving table becomes a humane table: a place of gratitude and integrity, that honors the animals, farmers and ecosystems that nurture our meals. Here are our top five tips for setting a humane table this Thanksgiving:

  1. Shop with purpose. Look for the American Humane Certified™ seal on meat, dairy, and eggs, which reflects the farmer’s commitment to humane, responsible care.
  1. Cook from a humane source. Try a recipe from The Humane Table: Cooking with Compassion, a cookbook by American Humane Society President and CEO Robin Ganzert. We’re sharing one special dish below.
  1. Pause and acknowledge. Before you eat, take a moment to recognize the farmers, animals, and land that contributed to your beautiful meal.
  1. Celebrate the human-animal bond. Share a family-pet story, recommend a nature documentary, or invite others to reflect on animals that have touched their lives.
  1. Keep it joyful. A humane table is about gratitude, respect, and delight, not restriction or guilt.
