An overwhelming majority of American adults – some 189 million by one count – are resolved to do things differently in 2021. New Year’s resolutions can be big or small, aggressive or cautious. Some will ring in the new year intent on looking like Arnold Schwarzenegger, while others will be content to drink more water.
This year, more than any other in recent memory, many are clamoring for a blank slate, an opportunity to start fresh and turn over a new leaf. It is no surprise why – the fallout of the coronavirus pandemic has affected virtually every corner of the globe and facet of humane life.
It is important to remember that everyone can build a better world with even the smallest of decisions. If 2020 taught us anything, it is that animal lives and human lives are inextricably connected. COVID-19 originated in a wet market in Wuhan, China, where animals are kept in inhumane, unhygienic conditions. The formation and spread of the virus are ultimately the result of a broken human-animal contract. It’s time to begin rebuilding that sacred bond.
