As wildfires continue to devastate parts of Los Angeles, American Humane Society has been working tirelessly to provide aid to animals affected by the disaster. In the midst of the disaster, our Rescue Team continues its work on the ground, to make sure that animals are not forgotten.
Today, we are working alongside the Red Cross to address the needs of animals impacted by the fires. Our Rescue Team is offering assistance across several Red Cross shelters to ensure the pets there have what they need. We are providing welfare checks, including making sure that animals have access to clean water, appropriate litter, and proper shelter. We are providing essential supplies, walking dogs, cleaning crates, and checking that animals are comfortable and well-cared-for during this challenging time.
In one especially touching story, we worked with the Red Cross Pet Liaison to care for a sweet dog named Dudette, whose family lost everything in the wildfires and were sheltering at a Red Cross location.
Dudette’s family feared she had been harmed by the fire when Dudette began wheezing, so they brought her to the pet liaison and our team for help.
We helped coordinate care for Dudette and thankfully determined that she did not suffer from smoke damage to her lungs but instead was battling an upper respiratory and ear infection. Now, Dudette is receiving treatment and is on her way to making a full recovery.
This is just one example of how collaboration can provide lifesaving care to animals during crisis.
