American Humane Society is proud to announce another joyful reunification, which was held just in time for the holidays.
Retired military working dog Darco has been reunited with his beloved former handler, SPC Kellee. This heartwarming homecoming highlights our ongoing mission to honor and protect the brave canines who serve alongside America’s military heroes.
Darco, a 9-year-old Belgian Malinois, served for seven years in Germany and Italy. Trained to detect narcotics and apprehend criminals, his work was vital to safeguarding lives and maintaining security on U.S. military bases abroad.
In 2023, Darco was paired with Kellee in Vicenza, Italy, where they served together for two years. Their bond was immediate and profound. Darco responded only to Kellee’s commands, a testament to the trust and loyalty forged through shared duty.
After their service together, Darco and Kellee were separated for six long months. The absence was deeply felt, as both handler and dog had grown accustomed to relying on one another in the most challenging circumstances. As Kellee reflects, “Darco reminds me why I do the work I do.”

Darco travelled over 4,400 miles from Italy to Maryland, where he was finally reunited with Kellee. American Humane Society proudly supported the reunion by helping with Darco’s transport, and we have pledged to cover his veterinary costs for the rest of his life, helping ensure this hero receives the care he deserves.
This veterinary care is especially critical for Darco, as he needs surgery to repair his ACL, which was torn in the line of duty. Kellee is excited to finally be by his side and help him through his recovery.
For Kellee, having Darco as part of her family is a dream fulfilled and a promise of many happy years ahead. Their reunion is a powerful reminder of the unbreakable bond between Military Working Dogs and their handlers.
“We are going to celebrate Christmas by chilling inside, and we’ve wrapped up some presents for him to try to unravel.”
American Humane Society believes that every hero deserves to come home. By reuniting Military Working Dogs with their handlers, we honor their service and celebrate the enduring human–animal bond.
