It’s the most wonderful time of the year… because nominations for the 2021 Hero Dog Awards open one week from today!

For thousands of years, dogs have protected us, comforted us in times of need, and selflessly saved the lives of those around them. The American Humane Hero Dog Awards – an annual, nationwide competition – is an opportunity to honor and celebrate the country’s courageous canines who provide us with unconditional love every day.

This past year, the coronavirus pandemic had unprecedented, widespread impacts on households across America. The pandemic affected household finances, jobs, health care, housing, transportation, caregiving, and overall well-being. Dealing with these stressors, while also isolating during mandated stay at home orders, had serious consequences for mental health. During this tough time, the love of a companion animal made all the difference for many people across the country.

The 2021 Hero Dog Awards will shine a spotlight on extraordinary dogs who over the past year have improved and even saved lives. This special awards programs salutes the incredible human-animal bond and provides a platform for dog lovers across the country to vote for their favorite hounds.

Each year, hundreds of dogs vie for the coveted title of ‘American Hero Dog,’ and in 2020, MacKenzie was selected as the winner – a small four-pound chihuahua who walked away with this top honor because of her big heart. MacKenzie was recognized in a star-studded virtual event that aired on Hallmark Channel to millions of households across the country. She received national media coverage and became a symbol of hope and love during the crazy times of 2020.

Starting January 6, dog owners across the country are invited to visit www.herodogawards.org and nominate their heroic pup in one of seven categories: Law Enforcement Dogs, Military Dogs, Therapy Dogs, Service Dogs, Shelter Dogs, Search and Rescue Dogs and Guide/Hearing Dogs.
