Betty White: The Gift That Keeps on Giving

For almost 100 years, Betty White’s greatest passion was to help animals, ensuring that more of them were treated with the love, care and compassion they deserve. Betty may have passed on December 31, 2021, but she is the gift that keeps on giving as seen by the astonishing outpouring of support for the online national #BettyWhiteChallenge.

We want to thank every animal lover and Betty White fan who rose so magnificently to the occasion and supported Betty’s vision of a kinder world for animals by joining this viral campaign on what would have been her 100th birthday. Betty was a tireless and devoted animal welfare advocate who donated seven decades of her heart’s work to American Humane. Because of her powerful voice and the dedication of those who took part in the #BettyWhiteChallenge, her legacy of love will continue to touch the lives of all those with whom we share the Earth.

Financial gifts to American Humane quadrupled over the three weeks following Betty’s passing, and in response to the swell of donations that came in to help us better the lives of animals around the world, we will continue honoring Betty’s memory by making the #BettyWhiteChallenge an annual event. Betty’s love for animals was timeless, and our pledge to celebrate that love must be, too.

We will also be opening the “Betty White Healing Garden” at our new national American Humane Sanctuary. The Sanctuary is a beautiful 10-acre refuge where animals in need of forever homes as well as veterans in critical need of healing service dogs can find a home, help and love. In this way, we will always keep the memory of Betty’s fervor and friendship alive.

On behalf of the millions of lives you have touched, thank you, Betty!
