American Humane Society Helps Army Handler Adopt Retiring Military Working Dog

On Memorial Day, we were honored to support a newly retired military working dog (MWD)’s adoption. Attila, a brave 6-year-old German Shepherd, was officially welcomed into the family of his former handler, U.S. Army SPC Kameron of Colorado Springs.

After serving side-by-side for four years on critical missions, including explosive detection at major events like the United Nations General Assembly Week, NATO Summits, and a presidential inauguration, Attila is now beginning a well-deserved retirement.

Unfortunately, Attila had to retire at a young age due to health issues. So, we are stepping in to cover the cost of all his future medical needs, relieving the financial burden for Kameron and his family. Retired MWDs often face unique health challenges; we help ensure all retired MWDs we reunify with their handlers have the most comfortable and healthy retirement possible by covering veterinary costs for the rest of their lives.

While serving in the Army together, Attila and Kameron built an unbreakable bond. Attila was Kameron’s steadfast companion, offering comfort that Kameron says made him the man he is today. Now, Attila will enjoy the rest of his days as a cherished family member, playing gently with Kameron’s children and other dogs, now able to relax on the couch and enjoy life as a family dog – his working years are over!

This touching story reminds us of the incredible loyalty and love these courageous animals share with their handlers—and how important it is to honor their service with compassion and care.
