From the Field: How American Humane Society Rescued Sweetie, a Pregnant Pup Found in Critical Condition in Texas

On March 12thAmerican Humane Society’s Rescue Team recovered Sweetie, a 1-year-old dog found in critical condition, during a rescue operation south of Dallas, Texas. Sweetie arrived at the veterinary clinic with a wounded, infected paw and a discovery that changed everything — she is pregnant with at least seven puppies.

How American Humane Society Found Sweetie

The American Humane Society Rescue Team was called to Texas for an operation across three locations with several dogs in need of urgent veterinary care.

Sweetie was quickly identified as one of the dogs in critical condition. Our Rescue Team located her and transported her immediately to an emergency veterinary clinic, where a full examination was conducted.

What the veterinary team found was heartbreaking. Sweetie’s paw was not only wounded, but badly infected, placing her long-term health at serious risk. Her leg will need to be amputated to give her the best chance at survival. It was in this examination that the veterinary team also confirmed that Sweetie, at just 1 year old, is pregnant and due to give birth soon – it could be weeks or even days.

What Happens Next for Sweetie and Her Puppies

Our Rescue Team is coordinating with local veterinarians on a thoughtfully phased care plan designed to protect both Sweetie and her pups.

Sweetie’s surgery will have to wait until her litter is delivered safely. In the days ahead, Sweetie will move to a safe, closely monitored environment where she will receive around-the-clock care as she approaches her due date. Once her puppies arrive, she will have a long road to motherhood and recovery. But she will not walk it alone.

Cases like Sweetie’s reflect our mission in its truest form: reaching animals in critical condition, providing expert veterinary intervention and guiding animals to safety and recovery.

American Humane Society’s Rescue Team has been doing exactly that for nearly 150 years. With rescue units stationed nationwide, and our Rescue Team is built to mobilize quickly and work alongside local law enforcement on large-scale animal cruelty and neglect investigations to reach animals in crisis before it’s too late.

Sweetie’s story is still being written. The next chapter depends on continued support.
