This Memorial Day, American Humane Society organized another successful reunification between a retired Military Working Dog and his former handler, U.S. Marine Corps veteran Sgt. Angela.
MWD Menson served our country for seven years as a patrol and scent detection dog with the Marine Corps in Hawaii. During his time, he was paired with former Sgt. Angela for eight months, bonding through late night shifts and a memorable secret service trip to Fiji. Due to a back injury, MWD Menson retired at 7 years old. He was able to retire among the people who loved him most, his fellow service members on base, where he became so beloved he was affectionately known as the “kennel mascot.”
Without MWD Menson, Angela felt as though a piece of her was missing. His quirkiness, the trust they built on duty and his floppy ears were never far from her mind. The chance to finally bring MWD Menson home, to give him the retirement he deserves, meant the world to her.

This is not the first time Angela has opened her heart and home to a four-pawed hero. In 2021, she was reunited with retired MWD Bogi through American Humane Society’s MWD Reunification program, giving him the loving retirement he deserved after his own years of faithful service. Now, with MWD Menson joining the family, the house is now complete. A true home of heroes.
When MWD Menson finally saw Angela again, his excitement said it all. Surrounded by Angela’s family, who had gathered to welcome him home, the reunion was celebrated by everyone who loves these incredible heroes.
The road home for retired MWDs is made possible by American Humane Society’s MWD Reunification program. This Memorial Day, Angela and MWD Menson’s reunion is a testament to the lasting bonds built in service and the importance of honoring them long after the work is done.
