Updated July 2026
Every October, American Humane Society celebrates Adopt-A-Dog Month®, the national initiative we launched in 1981 to inspire families to adopt a dog from a local shelter or rescue organization. For more than 40 years, the campaign has highlighted the importance of adoption, helping connect deserving dogs with loving families while encouraging responsible, lifelong pet ownership.
Why adopt a dog?
Choosing adoption gives a deserving dog a second chance while making room for another animal in need. Whether you’re looking for an energetic hiking companion, a playful family dog or a calm senior friend, shelters and rescue organizations are home to dogs of every age, size and personality.
Many adopted dogs:
- Are already socialized or house-trained
- Have received vaccinations, spay/neuter services and veterinary care
- Are ready to become loving, lifelong companions
Is adopting a dog right for you?
Bringing home a dog is a rewarding experience, but it’s also a long-term commitment. Before adopting, consider:
- Your lifestyle and daily schedule
- Your living space and activity level
- The time needed for training, exercise and companionship
- Ongoing costs like food, veterinary care and supplies
Preparing ahead of time helps create a smooth transition for both you and your new best friend.
