We Advance Animal Protection Through Research and Evidence-Based Practices
Led by Chief Veterinary Officer and Animal Ethicist Dr. Tom Edling, the Science and Standards Department helps ensure our work is backed by the latest scientific research and ethical best practices. By partnering with veterinarians, scientists and animal care professionals, we continuously refine our standards and guidelines for programs ranging from ecotourism and farms to service dogs and zoos & aquariums.
The department serves as a bridge between science and action, focusing on data-driven decision-making to measure the real impact of our standards. We don’t just write standards – we make them practical and effective for the people who care for animals every day. Whether helping farmers implement humane practices or guiding conservation efforts, our goal is to create standards that have a tangible, positive impact on animals’ lives while providing clear guidance and valuable education for caretakers across industries.
