Supervisor Training
American Humane, in conjunction with the University of Southern Maine, developed a 12-day, four-part training curriculum for child welfare supervisors entitled "Mastering the Art of Supervision." The curriculum is tailored for each state or county to include local policy and procedure. Since the early 1990s, American Humane has trained all new supervisors in Colorado using a modified version of the curriculum entitled, "Putting the Pieces Together" developed in conjunction with the Butler Institute for Families at the University of Denver. In recent years, American Humane has used customized versions of the curriculum to train supervisors in California, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Connecticut.
The training consists of four modules:
- Administrative Supervision
- Educational Supervision
- Case Consultation
- Supportive Supervision
The training is required of all new child welfare supervisors in Colorado counties. It is also available to new supervisors in private child welfare agencies. New supervisors not only value this training for its excellent curricula, but because it also provides a wonderful opportunity to meet other supervisors from across the state to share similar challenges and new ideas about child welfare practice.
