American Humane’s Shelter Training and Evaluation Program (STEP) offers customized assessments to nonprofit shelters and animal care and control agencies seeking objective advice and expert consultation in one or more areas of concern.

Types of Assessments

We offer a variety of assessment options that can be tailored to your operational and budgetary needs, including:

• Comprehensive assessment of overall performance, services and operations.
• Proactive consultation in which American Humane addresses one, two or three key components of the operation that have been identified by the client.
• Target-specific assessment that focuses on a particular issue, such as increasing animal adoptions, fundraising, human resources, field services, sanitation and disease control, animal handling, veterinary services, etc.

Following American Humane’s on-site assessment, we will provide you with a detailed written report that identifies your strengths, weaknesses and opportunities, along with advice on best practices and specific recommendations for improvement.
