Memphis Shelter Investigation
Helping Animals During Shelter Cruelty Investigation
On Oct. 27, 2009, American Humane’s Red Star Animal Emergency Services team, working alongside the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), began caring for pets housed in the City of Memphis Animal Shelter. That same day, the Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant at the shelter, which is being investigated in response to a concerned citizen’s accusation of alleged animal abuse.
According to the warrant, dogs were supposedly deprived of food and water -- in some cases to the point where euthanasia was required. There were also allegations of unsanitary conditions, overcrowding and inhumane housing practices that resulted in sick and vicious dogs being kept in the same areas as other pets in the shelter. The shelter was temporarily closed, and American Humane remained on site until the animals no longer required our care.

Volunteers from all over the country, like these two ASPCA members, flew in to help evaluate the animals at the City of Memphis Animal Services shelter on Tchulahoma Rd.
