Basic Equine Care and Handling for the Investigator
Sponsored by American Humane Association and the Colorado Bureau of Animal Protection
This intensive three-day course -- including extensive demonstrations and hands-on work with horses -- will give you the knowledge and confidence to identify and resolve horse abuse and neglect cases in your community. Key topics include:
- Basic horse identification skills, including breeds, colors and markings
- Basic equipment, including how to catch, halter, tie and trailer a horse or herd of horses
- Basic horse behavior
- Basic veterinary issues, including equine nutrition, equine disease, body scoring, and hoof and teeth care
- Investigative issues, including identifying and resolving horse abuse and neglect cases
Prerequisites: Prior to the start of the class, each student will receive an information packet and will be expected to study the material and pass a written test before attending the course. The material will include:
- Proper care and handling of horses
- Identification of horse breeds, colors and markings
- Proper investigative techniques to identify horse abuse
- Identification of illnesses and injuries, such as colic, stress, trauma, lameness, wounds and parasites
- Equine diet
- Proper hoof care
- Proper dental care
