Animal Emergency Services

Disaster Sheltering for Companion Animals

This class teaches important skills for planning and implementing emergency sheltering for companion animals; however, it is not a required training for becoming an official American Humane Red Star Animal Emergency Services™ Volunteer. To qualify to become a volunteer, you must attend Basic Animal Emergency Services training.

Who should attend:

Anyone interested in the welfare of animals during or after a disaster, professionals trained in disaster response, emergency medical services personnel, firefighters, animal shelter staff, animal control officers, veterinarians and vet technicians, animal handlers/trainers and Red Cross volunteers.

  • Safety concerns
  • Communication techniques
  • Site selection and amenities
  • Shelter set up
  • Identification and recordkeeping
  • Differences between human-made and natural disaster response
  • Animal handling
  • Managing volunteers
  • Security
  • Media relations
  • Legal issues and liability
  • Demobilization procedures

Learning objectives:

To develop the skills to plan for and implement emergency sheltering for companion animals during or after a disaster, whether at the local or national level.
