Fetching Good Fun

Looking for a fun game to play with your dog? How about fetch? Dogs love this game so much that they run in circles, bark, or jump into the air.

To play fetch, you’ll need a ball or a disc (like a Frisbee). Stand still and throw the object so your dog will chase it. When the object lands, your dog will likely pick it up and bring it back to you. If she doesn't seem interested in running after the ball try petting her or giving her treats when she shows interest in the game. Then, when you throw the ball and your dog chases after it, you can continue with the treats or the petting. By doing this, you’re teaching her that good things happen when she chases and brings back the ball.

After your dog has found the ball, call her to you. When she returns carrying the object, pet her. At first, your dog may want to hold onto the object tightly in her teeth. She may think it’s part of the game for you to tug the ball from her mouth. Gently get the ball from her, but don't fight her for it. She will soon realize that she has to give the object to you or drop it to keep playing the game. Once she knows that fun will follow, she will eagerly drop the object again and again.

Sometimes, after a long game of fetch, your dog will hold onto the ball and lie down. She's just resting. This is a great time to sit quietly with your dog, pet her, and tell her what a great friend she is.
